 Nelson National Triptych Salon Success

Congratulations to Ilan Wittenberg on winning the Champion image at the Nelson National Triptych Salon for his triptych 'Silo 6'! Located at Wynyard Quarter, Silo 6 is a massive structure of old cement silos. Dominating the skyline with their grungy finish, these silos that are now used to host art exhibitions and culture events in Auckland
Notes from Ilan:
"Back in September 2013, I was looking for a suitable venue to hold a photographic exhibition. I was given access to this amazing structure for only 15 minutes . As soon as I entered I was totally inspired by the great height, the unique structure and the grungy surface. I quickly went back to my car and picked up the tripod. Using a wide angle lens, I positioned the camera as low as I possibly could, facing it up, towards the ceiling. I couldn't see the viewfinder nor the display at the back since the camera was about 30cm from the floor. Setting it on self timer to avoid camera shake, I went on to take five different exposures from each composition between the six silos. This enabled me to create the HDR finish and an edgy look. Enhancing contrast and saturation resulted in the dramatic outcome which I was looking to achieve while the square format turned out perfect for the triptych layout.

I am now very excited to invite you to my first solo photographic exhibition which will take place inside Silo 6 (Wynyard Quarter) during November 19-30. Check out all about it in: www.silo6.co.nz"

Ilan will judge our next open evening on September 24th.

Finding Vivian Maier - Academy Cinema 30th October

At the end of Breen’s talk about Street Photography at our September meeting he encouraged members to have a look at the work of Vivian Maier. Her Images of American and French ‘ Street  Life’ were only discovered when literally thousands of her negatives were acquired at auction by John Maloof.
The Acedemy Theatre will be showing a film, from October 30th, ‘Finding Vivian Maier’
A mysterious nanny, who secretly took over 100,000 photographs that were hidden in storage lockers and discovered decades later, the images she had taken are now being recognized as some of the finest street photography of the 20th Century.
Maier’s strange and riveting life and art are reveled through never before seen photographs, films, and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her.

I was privileged to see a preview of this Movie and can thoroughly recommend it to you.
