Instructions for Print entries
(Assessment nights are open to financial members only).
- Entries may be in the form of monochrome or colour prints/projected images, and each financial member may submit up to a total of 2 entries per month on either of the two assessment nights within the print and projected digital image categories. Each category will consist of a ‘set subject’ and an ‘open’ section. Entries may be placed in either section.
- There shall be three grades – C, B, and A.
- Awards shall be as follows: Honours… 5 points. Highly Commended…3 points. Acceptance…1 point. An extra point is awarded for set subject entries.
- At the discretion of the Committee, promotion to a higher grade in either prints or projected images may be achieved thus: C to B by gaining 30 points which must include 5 Honours; B to A by gaining 75 points which must include 8 Honours; or by the submission of a set of 12 prints or projected images to the Committee; provided that at any time promotion from one grade to another is optional at the discretion of the member.
- Prints in all grades may be of any size, but the mat must fit within a rectangle of 40cm x 50cm. and may be framed but without glass. Prints shall be clearly marked on the back with the member’s name, grade and section (i.e. set subject or open) and title if desired. Pre-registration of print entries is made to the Images Convenor at prints@northshorephoto.co.nz before 8.00p.m. on the Sunday prior to the assessment night.
- Digital image entries are e-mailed to the Images Convenor at projected@northshorephoto.co.nz before 8.00p.m. on the Sunday prior to the assessment night. Information regarding file size and identification of each image can be found on the NSPS website: www.northshorephoto.co.nz
- No image which has gained an award in ordinary monthly assessment may be entered again in monthly assessments but may be entered in annual competitions or salons. However, any print or projected image may be reprinted or remounted in accordance with the suggestions of any judge, or where, in the opinion of the exhibitor, such reprinting or remounting presents a much improved or different exhibit, provided that a period of at least six months shall have elapsed between the original showing and re-submission.
- Copies of another person’s work will not be eligible, and prints or projected images taken at demonstrations at the Society are ineligible except at the discretion of the Committee.
- At the end of year competition, members may enter work in only one grade. Thus a member who has moved up a grade during the year must exhibit in the new grade.
- In all matters pertaining to Society competitions and assessments the Committee of the North Shore Photographic Society (Inc.) will be the final authority.
Notes of Interest for New Members of North Shore Photographic Society re: Mounting of Prints
Some members choose to print their own images. If you prefer to pay for a commercial print for club display the photo centres at any branch of Harvey Norman offer the best price deals. Become a VIP member by asking to do so, and the cost is further reduced. Pages Printing in Brown’s Bay offer a very reasonably priced laser print service.
Prints in all grades may be any size. The mat size may also vary, but the maximum size for a mat is that it must fit within a rectangle of 40cm X 50cm. The mat may be framed but without glass. This is important as prints mounted with glass will be withdrawn from the selection process.
Mounting your own prints by cutting your own mat boards and backing boards is rewarding and is a skill easily attained with practice. On a club night ask who can tell you more about doing this and the equipment required. Gordon Harris Art Supplies in Albany is a good source of the materials and equipment required.
However, the majority of members purchase their mat boards and backing boards (either card or 3mm foam core board) from Factory Frames, 22 Apollo Drive, Mairangi Bay.
You may choose to mount the print permanently using a double-sided adhesive sheet. Again, Gordon Harris Art Supplies stock this material.
Most members choose to reuse their mats and backing boards because of associated cost.
Method: Lay the mat and backing board on a flat surface and place a run of masking tape along the join to form a hinge. Use small pieces of sellotape (Scotch Removable Magic Tape is the best choice) to attach the print onto the backing board or mat, according to your preference. Small pieces of tape across the top and on each side will hold the print in place. Avoid the overuse of tape as the prints may buckle within the mat. Then apply short lengths of double-sided tape to the sides of the backing board, to hold the mat securely to the backing board.
If you find the above process confusing, ask another member, who has a print displayed on a club Print Assessment Night, to explain the construction to you.
Remember: a neat, tidy, and securely presented print will put the judge into a relaxed mind frame!
